Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I consume media. The days of waiting for the evening news or reading the morning paper are over. Now, I’m navigating a sea of digital content, choosing what I want to engage with and when. This realization has been a bit of an awakening—now, I understand I have the power to control how and when I consume information. It feels like an awakening to new possibilities.
The Rise of Digital and Personalized Content
Today, it’s all about convenience and personalization. Like many, I get most of my news from my phone or tablet. In fact, Pew Research Center found that 86% of U.S. adults now rely on digital devices for news (Pew Research Center). Additionally, social media and news apps like Flipboard or Apple News help me filter content to match my interests. I love curating my feed and focusing on what matters most to me. This is part of my ongoing awakening.
The Power of Podcasts
Meanwhile, podcasts have also become a big part of my routine. I listen while driving or working out, enjoying everything from current events to storytelling. According to Edison Research, over a third of Americans are doing the same (Edison Research). For me, it’s a way to stay informed or entertained without being glued to a screen. Podcasts are another facet of my media awakening.
Video Content on Demand
Then there’s video—whether it’s quick TikToks or deep dives on YouTube. I love the variety and immediacy of visual content. In fact, HubSpot reports that video is now the most popular content format on social media (HubSpot). It’s clear that we crave quick, engaging visuals that fit into our busy lives. Video content has been another awakening for how I consume media.
Embracing the Shift
Overall, this shift has been empowering. Now, I get to choose the “what,” “when,” and “how” of my media diet. I’m embracing this new way of engaging with the world, taking in content that enriches my life, on my terms. It feels like a true media awakening.
